The Project
2009 GOAL COMPLETE!! Two years ago, the first Change Gears Change Lives event was held in Williston, Vermont where participants raised over $14,000 to open a feeding center in the colonia of Ramon Perez Garcia located outside Reynosa, Mexico. The center is now open and serving the community. On a daily basis, over 30 children are receiving a warm breakfast before going off to school! Here is Stan Horrell, one of the project facilitators, on the purpose of the building:
A photograph of the feeding center in the colonia of Ramon Perez Garcia, Reynosa, Mexico.
“Over half the children the colonia of Ramon Perez go to school not having breakfast; numerous others without an adequate breakfast. The feeding center is needed to address this need in a safe environment, where loving people can not only provide a good and sufficient breakfast, but also take interest in the overall success of their education. This benefits the community in numerous ways; First, it fulfills a need that parents aren't in a position to financially provide. Secondly, the center becomes a gathering point for other community activities like medical resources, social events, spiritual wellness, etc. In addition, the center has been constructed in a manner that it provides the greatest protection for the families of the colonia in times of extreme weather conditions like hurricanes.” -Stan Horrell, Mission Discovery
